What are the Latest Changes in the Test Pattern of NCLEX-RN?

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is in charge of developing the NCLEX and ensuring that it accurately assesses the nursing competency of new entrants. Every three years, the NCSBN assesses how successfully the NCLEX performs this assessment and makes adjustments as needed. From April 1st 2023 onwards NCLEX-RN pattern updated and renamed as Next Gen NCLEX also known as Next Generation NCLEX (NGN).

The computer adaptive testing method will still be used for the next generation NCLEX, which is one thing that won't change. As a result, the difficulty of the subsequent question you receive depends on how you respond to each one. To enable the computer algorithm to assess your level of knowledge, the objective will be to reach and maintain a specific level of difficulty.

NCLEX Current Question Types

The new NCLEX will continue to employ all of the previous question types. On the NCLEX, you can encounter the following types of questions:

  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Choose all that apply
  • Hot spot
  • Fill in the blank
  • Drag and Drop
  • Video or Audio
  • Graphics or Charts
  • Graphics answer multiple choice
  • Multiple-choice questions-Which make up the majority of NCLEX questions, giving you an option of several possible answers for a given question.
  • Choose all that apply-Questions with the option "Select all that apply" are thought to be fairly challenging. You must choose each response that applies to the question for each of these questions.
  • Hot spot -Hot spot questions require you to choose a specific region in a visual that provides the answer, however, they are less frequent.
  • Fill in the blank-You must enter an accurate free text response for fill-in-the-blank questions. Frequently, this will be a numerical value, like a dose estimation.
  • Drag and Drop-Typically, this question type asks the test-taker to list the solutions in the right sequence, such as listing the steps of a process consecutively.
  • Video or Audio-You will be asked to watch a video or listen to an audio clip while completing these questions.
  • Graphics or Charts -Both text and an image will be included in these questions. This kind of inquiry, for instance, would ask you to identify a heart rhythm from its outward manifestation.
  • Graphics answer multiple choice-In place of text responses, this type of multiple-choice question employs pictures or images.

What to Expect from Next Gen NCLEX?

The majority of the 2024 NCLEX modifications will be components of this new exam that are added. Here are the changes in the NCLEX exam;

  • Harder Question Content
  • New Question Formats
  • Number of scored questions

1.Harder Question Content

The NCSBN found that nurses are now treating critically ill patients more frequently than they have in the past while reviewing the NCLEX. The difficulty of the new NCLEX questions will increase as a result of the increasing focus on caring for more critically sick patients due to the higher care quality.

2.New Question Formats

While all the current NCLEX question types will be kept, the next generation NCLEX will also include a number of new question kinds that will be very dissimilar to those that nursing students are currently used to. Among these fresh query kinds are:

  • Case scenario questions
  • Drop down options
  • Extended drag and drop
  • Highlight text
  • Matrix
  • Case scenario questions :NCLEX questions have been stand-alone inquiries with no connections to one another. A single case may be the source of 2 to 8 questions on the new NCLEX. You will receive a patient record with multiple tabs and a split screen in certain situations. Each case study will have many, non-adaptive questions, with the patient record on one side and the questions on the other.
  • Drop-down options:These questions, which are essentially a hybrid of multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank, will offer a drop-down list of potential solutions to finish a sentence.
  • Extended drag and drop:With the exception of the fact that there would be more responses than available places and also some responses will need to be omitted, this type of question will be similar to the standard drag-and-drop.
  • Highlight text:The answers to these queries will be provided by highlighting a specific section of the relevant passage.
  • Matrix :These will have more than just a "choose or don't select" choice, similar to a select all that apply inquiry. For instance, the question stem might present you with a choice of eight different interventions, and it will be up to you to decide if they are necessary, unnecessary, or contraindicated.

3.Number of Scored Questions;

The new NCLEX will include scored questions from 70 to 135 instead of the old NCLEX 60 to 130, however, this is not a significant change. But like the current edition, the new NCLEX will last 5 hours.
